Nina Elizabeth Foster
Radioactive by Imagine Dragons
description:; Nina has a body developed for agility, flexibility, and strength. Long limbs and a tall, slim build, make her quick and nimble; but padded with obvious tone, she carries an intimidating power about her as well. Her dark, chestnut eyes reveal an inner fierceness matching with the wild waves of her long, brunette curls. Her sun-kissed, caramel colored skin is marred only by the occasional freckle, and a wide, ragged burn scar patching her upper-left arm.

One would think having a dragon around would be enough protection, but of course, Nina can’t exactly bring Essie into the heart of civilization lest she send the unawares humans into a panic. You can almost bet Nina keeps a piece or two on her person, her favorites being a pair of Glock-17s. She keeps a hunting knife strapped on her right side, but it’s less a weapon and more of a useful tool.
whatcha~wearin?:;Nina keeps her apparel light and durable, neutral in color. Her constant travel keeps her wardrobe to a minimum. She’s a huge fan of military-style cargo pants or shorts with a basic t-shirt or tank top, and boots or tennis shoes, depending on her mood. She also keeps an clearly worn, black, hooded sweatshirt on hand for chilly or damp weather.
transportation:;Esmeralda, the Dragon of course
anything.else.you'd.like.to.share?:;Although she names the small apartment in Hawaii her home, her constant travel keeps her personal possessions to a minimum. In addition to simple, basic necessities making up her daily belongings, Nina does almost always have a new book buried in her knapsack, an old, white Ipod, and a pack of cigarettes she can only smoke if Essie isn’t nearby.
disposition to the law:;
Chaotic
alignment:;
Good
likes:;
Warm weather, reading, music, traveling, surfing
dislikes:;
Authority, idling, cold/rainy weather, Hunters, deities
phobias:;
Her most prominent fear is the death of her dragon, Esmeralda (Essie), who has been her dearest friend in recent years.
obsessions:;
Obsessed with constant motion, exemplified by her inability to remain in one place for too long, consistent insomnia, and an inability to do nothing. Even when she is motionless, her mind must still be busy.
background:;
Growing up, Nina knew nothing of her Draconian roots. She was adopted from an orphanage in California and raised by two normal humans, Patricia and Russell Foster, alongside an older brother (also adopted) named Cameron, and lived a relatively normal human life. She was privy to the fact the Fosters were her adoptive parents, as they revealed this to her at a young age, as they did with Cameron. Accepting this fact with childlike innocence, she loved the Fosters like any other daughter would love her parents. She would not discover her heritage until her late teen years. However, there was always a part of her that longed to know exactly where she came from; and at the back of her mind, there existed a persistent feeling of emptiness, like a part of her was lost out in the world. Nina attributed this feeling to her unknown birth parents (naturally), but little did she know of the great beast, a guardian angel of sorts, who would reveal her destiny.
Nina’s childhood was a series of new schools and new people on a regular basis. Her parents were United States Marines, regularly re-assigned to various locations throughout the world every few years. Nina and Cameron hardly knew what it meant to settle down, grow roots, or make strong relationships. Nina could remember moving from South Korea, to Alaska, to Japan, to Great Britain, to Israel, and to Hawaii, having to constantly re-adjust to new classmates, new cultures outside the bases, and new time zones.
Nina never actually minded the consistent relocations. In fact, she quite enjoyed them. Far from shy and usually adaptive to change, she never had trouble with new people or new places. However, her restless, curious, and thrill-seeking demeanor did lead her into trouble more often than not. Constant relocating coupled with her own wild, restless nature, Nina never really learned how to stay still. As a young girl, she was constantly in trouble for talking too much, not holding still, not listening, and being overall disobedient. Despite, or perhaps because of, the strict discipline of her military parents, Nina rather resented authority, rules, laws, and norms. Many of these qualities followed her into her young teen years. From accepting dares to bend the rules and even breaking the law, to relishing the thrill of a new drug or substance, she typically found herself in trouble with local authorities, if not her parents themselves. She found the adrenaline rush kept that nagging, empty, longing feeling at bay. Unsurprisingly, Nina did spend time in juvie while her parents were station in the states, and even spent a couple over-nighters in overseas jails if they were stationed abroad.
Frustrated with their daughter’s actions and blatant disregard for the law, Nina’s parents had her spend two years in ROTC boot-camp (her 15th and 16th birthday). It was a desperate attempt by her parents to humble their daughter lest she become nothing but a mere criminal by the time she reached adulthood. Nina accepted this as she would any other challenge, and performed relatively well during her stay. Sober for two years, she lost her taste for hard drugs, but never really kicked her nicotine habit, still stealing the occasional drag. Her attitude towards authority never really changed, however. While she behaved in camp, mostly because she had little say in the matter, she never did feel like rules in general actually applied to her unless she agreed with them – a belief she holds to this day.
Not itching for a military-bound life, Nina was allowed to leave boot-camp, and spent her remaining teen years on Hawaii Island where her parents were currently stationed. She took up surfing to keep herself occupied, and even worked odd jobs to buy herself a small loft in order to get out from under her parents’ rules and regulations. Even as they were deployed elsewhere, Nina made the large island her home. It was here she discovered Esmeralda, her lost story, and the missing piece of her soul. It was in this meeting that Nina realized the quiet whisper in the back of her mind, all her life, was Essie’s masked presence.

background:;Esmeralda was born in a time when humans were more aware of the supernatural; what they understood as magic was commonplace, extra-ordinary beings were more than mere folklore or ghost stories, and more daring (or stupid) humans known as knights hunted dragons for honor and glory. Esmeralda faced her share of knights as a young dragon, either successfully escaping them, or mortally wounding them with scalding water from her body. Like many dragons of her time, Esmeralda grew to hate humankind. Consequently, Dragons of this era fell into two categories when it came to humans: some did their best to avoid them, and others made it their purpose in life to terrorize them. Esmeralda fell into the latter category for a time, stealing livestock for food rather than wildlife, raining scalding water down upon unsuspecting villages, and trampling fields upon which humans grew food.
Over a couple decades, terrorizing humans would lose its luster, and Esmeralda spent a great deal of time in solitude, sometimes sleeping for days at a time. Rumors of humans that could speak to Dragons would reach her ears, humans that could befriend her kin, bond with them even; but these absurdities were shrugged off carelessly. Esmeralda felt she knew the depths of the human heart. They were greedy, blood-thirsty, soulless creatures. She wanted nothing to do with them except the occasional village raid when she felt bored.
Over the next couple centuries, human technology would advance greatly, and their tolerance for, understanding in, and even belief in the supernatural would wane in turn. Esmeralda watched from the sidelines as Draconians and Dragons made their bonds and existed together. She herself never came across the Draconian meant for her. In some ways, she was happy with that, as she is still holding on to century-old grudges. In other ways, however, her life of solitude has become more and more lonely. While she didn’t exactly long for a human companion, the idea of one appealed more and more to her as the years wore on.
Soon, she noticed a faint pull at the back of her mind, a strange and foreign feeling at first, but somehow familiar and welcome, comforting even. One day, Esmeralda awoke to the faint cry of a human child. She was hidden deep within a mountainous region at the time, and it made no sense to hear such a sound. She suddenly realized it wasn’t coming from anywhere outside the depths of the cavern she was in, but from within her own mind. Her Draconian had been born.
All her doubts fled her in that moment. Esmeralda finally discovered why other dragons felt such a strong bond with their Draconians – they were connected by their very souls. She located the infant Draconian within a few days, but came upon a sight that still haunts her dreams. The community was relatively isolated. Surrounded by rolling hills, it stood in a central valley, or at least it did until it was burnt to the ground. It was obviously the work of hunters. Somehow they had located this community of Draconians, slaughtered all they could find, and lit each dwelling on fire. Smoking remnants of the community is the sight Esmerlada discovered when she landed. Her first reaction was to flee, for fear the hunters may still be nearby. However, the cries of her Draconian still echoed in her mind. The child was still alive. Esmeralda would discover the newborn in the arms of a deceased woman she could only presume to be the mother.
Esmeralda’s heart sank. She realized this small human could not be her companion for many years. Sirens rang in the distance. Esmeralda ensured the infant would easily be discovered, and fled the scene. It would be a few years before she would properly introduce herself to the infant who captured her soul.

__________
The day was dark and dreary, the sky full of dark grey, ominous clouds. Nina knew she shouldn’t be out alone in the water, but the swell was too sweet to pass up. The wind bustled about her as she hovered upon the yellow long board in the water waiting for the ideal wave to roll up behind her. Her wetsuit clung to her body, keeping the chill at bay. She looked behind her once more, the wind blowing straight in her face, and there it was, the one. Heart racing, Nina lined herself up to catch the wave, paddling quickly to match its speed.
Esmeralda could feel the girl’s excitement. It wasn’t the first time she had watched her rider from afar. ‘Maybe today,’ she thought to herself. The surrounding area was empty of other people, something that didn’t happen often in this modern world. Of course, people of this era hardly looked up and noticed their surroundings anymore. Even Dragons went unnoticed by mere mortals. Yes, Esmeralda finally concluded to herself. Today was the day; it was time. Suddenly, Nina dropped out of sight, below the water. Esmeralda could feel Nina’s panic. She was rolling under the water, caught in an undertow so strong she couldn't find the surface.
‘This is it,’ Nina thought candidly to herself. She knew full well the undertow wouldn’t release her until it was too late. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to find the surface. Blinded by the sting of salt water, dizzy from the rolling waves, and suffocating on the weight of the water, Nina knew she was drowning. And then, she was floating. The rolling waves grew smaller and smaller, and suddenly, she was back on the ground. Even disoriented, she realized she was alive, up on one of the hillsides lining the cove. Her board was gone but the cord was still attached to her ankle, and her wetsuit was torn in several places. Coughing, she looked around, confused as to how she came to be here. Don’t be afraid, a voice whispered at the back of her mind. She whirled around, knowing exactly where the “voice” had come from. A dragon was looking back at her, but strangely, or perhaps not so strangely at all, Nina felt no fear. She was looking upon a long lost friend. What took you so long? Nina’s heart whispered.
Esmeralda looked upon her rider as if for the first time. Her heart soared. Nina was not afraid of her. They were two souls that had been longing for each other for quite some time. Esmeralda almost laughed at Nina’s first thoughts. Why had it taken her so long to come foreword? Esmeralda had yearned for this meeting ever since she discovered the child in the destroyed village. Perhaps she was just afraid. Nina interrupted her thoughts, probably listening in and deciding it didn't matter why. They were both just thankful the other was near. I think Esmeralda is too proper a name for such close friends. You mind if I call you Essie? Anybody else would have been scalded right then and there, but in this moment, nothing would make Esmeralda – ESSIE – happier than a new name bestowed upon her by her oldest friend.
{{{ I'm pretty excited about this character and this site. You guys seem to have an amazing thing going on here.
